Air emissions

Background

EU legislation aims at preventing and controlling pollutant emissions in order to preserve and improve air quality in the EU. The EU has developed a comprehensive set of legislations to reach that objective.

Biomass installations

All sizes of biomass installations are covered by EU legislation in order to maintain the level of emissions as low as possible. Three main legislations cover biomass installations:

– Industrial Emission Directive – Chapter III – Special provisions for Large Combustion Plants covers installations with a total rated thermal input above 50 MW

– Medium Combustion Plant Directive, covering installations with a rated thermal input equal to or greater than 1 MW and less than 50 MW

– Eco-design directive lot 15 (solid fuel boilers) and lot 20 (local space heaters)
